BIL Conference » What is BIL?
BIL is to TED, what BarCamp is to FooCamp.
We’re all huge fans of TED. We love that they’ve opened up the TED talks to everyone by putting them online for free. But some of us would like to be more engaged and involved. We want to interact with the presenters and attendees, and share our ideas. There’s only two problems:
- TED costs $6,000
- Even if you can afford it, you must apply and be accepted to attend
There are interesting and intelligent people out there who want to share their knowledge. For those of us who can’t afford TED and/or don’t have the connections to get in, we’ve started BIL.
BIL is an open, self-organizing, anarchic and emergent conference. Everyone is invited, and everyone is encouraged to present.
We’re not trying to replace TED; we’re trying to complement it.

TED is fantastic, and an “open” version would be gravy on the cake. I don’t know if “open” is the right term, since TED is quite “open”, comparatively to other conferences. Perhaps “uncontrolled” would be a better term.
Where, exactly, is BIL supposed to take place? “Monterey” is not quite detail. Perhaps I’m just missing something obvious, but I didn’t see the venue.
