BIL is...

an open, self-organizing, emergent, and anarchic science and technology conference.

Nobody is in charge.

If you want to come, just show up.

If you have an idea to spread, start talking.

If someone is saying something interesting, stop and listen.

BIL Conference » We’re capping attendance

We had no idea BIL would be this popular when we started planning. Our facility holds 150 people, and at the time we didn’t consider that there’d be more people interested.

Per the request of the facility manager, we’re capping attendance at 150 people and no longer adding people to the attendance list.

If you aren’t able to make it, join us next year. Now that we’ve proven interest in this concept we’ll be ready for the next BIL.

We’ll be accepting donations at BIL to support next year’s BIL. We’ll also have a PayPal donation set up for those who couldn’t make it.

This weekend is just the start of the BIL community.

Sounds like one helluva nexcellent adventure.

    So,
This may be a silly question. How are you handling attendance? I’m #159. If there are no shows, can I still get in?

    Thanks!

    Geetings BIL Staff,

I have a solution for you to consider: a PA System so that more people outside the building can still hear what’s going on inside the building.

You may not have to turn away anyone after all.

I have a 1000 watt PA system ready to roll that can be set up in an hour or so, pending layout, cabling and such.

While I may not be able to get it there by 9:am, I can probably have it set up by Noon:ish, before the real bulk of the crowd shows up, which can be used for the rest of the BIL Event.

Please get back to me tonight, this Leap Day, about your interest and support for this possibility because there are a lot of little details and logistics that I need to sort out with you folks to make this happen smoothly and painlessly.

In the true Spirit of BIL, the cost is free. (-but I would like five minute promo spot however…)

I will be monitoring both my email and this “Capping” Wiki Page for feedback and logistics items to work with and consider. Or if you have a direct phone contact, email me and we can work things out in real time.

    Glad to be of help,

    GJ ~:-)

Any Chance some of these talks could be recorded and broadcasted.
This is an awesome idea and I would have loved to attend!!!

  9. BIL and TED’s excellent philosophical differences | Words & Tricks Says:

[...] Organizers (that would be YOU) mean for BIL to be free and open-to-all (though organizers had to cap attendance at 150 this year) experience, believing that good ideas don’t always travel from the top [...]

Thank goodness I wasn’t the only one to react slow to this year’s BIL. Have just sent an e-mail to Todd Huffman to see if we can coordinate some publicity, potential future support etc. If this is wrong, then I don’t want to be right. No wait, what I meant was, if there’s someone else I should contact, let me know, just sittin’ here in Switzerland doin’ my thing.

I think this is a fantastic idea! If BIL integrates some form of video documentation similar to TED’s, then you’ll have yourself a “grassroots” following among webbernetters!
