A Kybernetes was the Navigator, lead Steersman and observer, and on-board Commander of a Greek Trireme ship, which had 3 rows of oars and optional sailing masts. The first paper to conceptualize Cyborg begins: “A wanderer is man from birth… on a ship… the challenge of space travel to mankind is not only to his technological prowess, it is also a spiritual challenge to take an active part in his own biological evolution.”
Ross will present conceptual relationships between the words in the presenation’s title and the above and related quotes, using a word table. These words label both X and Y axes, and some interesting combinations result at their coordinates; spanning interpretations of Cybernetics from its inception and etymology, to the present. I will demonstrate the Humanistic relationship between the skills and experience required of the Kybernetes as it relates to ancient and contemporary notions from governors to surviving changing environs. I conclude that the Cyborg is more about being a vessel for Humanity than becoming futuristic technology.
