So you want to expand the hackerspace concept to biology. Perhaps you want to extrapolate Moore’s Law to Bio. Perhaps yo think the traditional ‘degree-based’ model of apprenticeship at academic institutions has largely outlived itself as a major mode of bioscience and engineering research and technology transfer. You think there’s an alternative, more streamlined way for individuals to become involved in biotech completely independent of the university..or perhaps you just want a lab to tinker in on weekends. But how to organize it?
I want to share my experience being involved in evolving So-Cal DIYBio from the ground up: what worked, what didn’t, where to turn when you’re stuck, and what caveats you will face as a future founder of a bio hackerspace. I will talk about how to use your social network, local university, and hardware store to get the resources you need.
