Where did we come from? For most of human history the answer was obvious: we came from the gods. Over the past few centuries the rise of science means that that question is now amenable to scientific exploration. Science converges upon particular orthodoxies or truths held through consensus, but there are also periods of “paradigm shifts.” When it comes to the recent origin of H. sapiens sapiens we are in a phase of paradigm shift. What we knew to be true may not be true, and what we held to be ludicrous on the face of it may be closer to the mark! This is not “news you can use,” but news which which hopefully will make you reflect on who you are, and how you came to be.
